Sciatica or Something Else?

Understanding the Cause of Your Pain

Pain that travels from the lower back into the hip or down the leg is often described as sciatica. For some people it may feel like a dull ache, while for others it can be sharp, burning or difficult to ignore.

Sciatica is very common but many people are surprised to learn that not all leg or hip pain is actually caused by the sciatic nerve itself.

At Bowenworks, I often see clients who have been struggling with ongoing discomfort and are unsure where the pain is really coming from. Understanding the possible causes can help guide the most appropriate support for recovery.

What Is Sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It begins in the lower back and travels through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg.

Sciatica occurs when the nerve becomes irritated or compressed. This may cause:

  • Pain through the lower back, buttock, or leg
  • Tingling or pins and needles
  • Numbness
  • Tightness through the hips or legs
  • Discomfort when sitting or standing for long periods

For some people the symptoms come and go, while others experience more persistent pain.

What Can Cause Sciatica?

There are many possible reasons the sciatic nerve may become irritated. Common causes include:

  • Disc irritation in the lower back
  • Tight muscles around the hips and pelvis
  • Poor posture or prolonged sitting
  • Muscle strain
  • Pregnancy
  • Physical stress or overuse
  • Previous injury

Stress and tension within the body may also contribute to ongoing tightness and discomfort.

Conditions That Can Feel Like Sciatica

One of the challenges with sciatic pain is that other conditions can create very similar symptoms.

Piriformis Syndrome

The piriformis is a small muscle deep in the buttock. If it becomes tight, it can place pressure on the sciatic nerve and create pain down the leg.

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction

The sacroiliac joints connect the pelvis and lower spine. When these joints become irritated, pain may be felt through the lower back, buttock, or leg.

Muscle and Fascia Tightness

Tension through the glutes, hamstrings, or lower back can sometimes refer pain into the leg and mimic sciatica symptoms.

This is one reason why a proper assessment is important when pain persists.

How Bowen Therapy May Help

Bowen Therapy is a gentle soft tissue therapy that works with the body to encourage relaxation and support recovery.

Using subtle rolling movements over muscles and connective tissue, Bowen aims to help reduce tension within the body and calm the nervous system.

Many clients seek Bowen Therapy to support:

  • Lower back discomfort
  • Hip and pelvic tightness
  • Muscular tension
  • Reduced mobility
  • Stress and tension patterns

Because Bowen Therapy is gentle and non-invasive, many people find it deeply relaxing while also helping the body release protective tension patterns that may be contributing to discomfort.

Every Body Is Different

Sciatic pain can affect people very differently. What works well for one person may not be the same for another.

Sometimes the body simply needs support to relax, rebalance and recover from ongoing tension and strain.

If you are experiencing ongoing back, hip or leg discomfort and are looking for a gentle and holistic approach, Bowen Therapy may be worth exploring.

At Bowenworks, treatments are tailored to the individual and designed to support the body’s natural ability to heal and restore balance.
